Each point of view has only one chapter, and many times the point of view ends before the character’s conflict is dealt with (although some are tied up or hinted at in other chapters from a different point of view). One of the smartest narrative decisions that Phillips makes in the construction of this novel is not to introduce us to Marina, the mother of the missing girls, until close to the end.
This one gets 4 stars from me and only because a few parts dragged. Because she was an older teenager when she disappeared, though, and because there were no eyewitnesses to her disappearance, there is hope that she was given the power of choice: that she elected to disappear, rather than the alternative—that she was abducted or killed. Do you see any similarities to the way people talk about crimes in your own community? Instead of a more conventional murder mystery, we’re given eleven glimpses (one for each month) into the lives of various characters as they deal with the aftermath of the disappearance.

Even if Yegor's not doing anything to her, I still think it's Lilia screaming, perhaps out of despair/mental illness due to being locked up for years. How does this opening story relate to other examples of disappearances in the book? It was what she did: live while others could not.

The “Disappearing Earth: A novel” is an awesome novel that delivers complex characters, nuanced relationships, and an engrossing story. This is a novel about women; men in the book are often absent or portrayed as less than ideal.
