Might be worth asking there about the controller. Beware of frontends ripping design choices, using proprietary software packs, and generally being shady.

Arc Browser, I spent a year slowly renaming 20,000 for it, but it was worth it, once you set it up, you can port your work universally to any Android based system, I have my setup on a firestick, Samsung galaxy, 4,5 and 8 and a SHIELD TV.

I recently set everything up on my device though so I'll outline what I did. I don't know why you can't tweak any of the settings for any of the emulators in RetroX. Once you have the cores installed you'll want to tell RetroArch where your roms are located. It runs well on my system and it did a real nice job scraping all the info.
I want it to be sleek and painless.
Choose "Select File" and you should see a list of your files in the folder you specified earlier. LaunchBox is not available for Android but there are some alternatives with similar functionality.

I'm using Arc browser as an emulator front end, its not free but its very good.
I started reading about front ends and kept seeing 2 names: Arc Browser and RetroArch. PPSSPP, Mednafen PSX, and a few others may display incorrectly or not at all if "Config" is selected.
I saw a video by ETA Prime and his setup looks really sleek. (*) Android 4.3 or higher is required for physical controllers, (**) Any Android compatible controller is supported.
